Updated November 2026. Students searching for KCSE 2025 English Paper 3 questions and answers usually want two things: questions in the same style as the 2025 paper, and answers that show how high-scoring essays are built. This page gives you both, using original practice prompts rather than a copy of the KNEC paper. English Paper 3 (101/3), Creative Composition and Essays Based on Set Texts, is a 2 hour 30 minute paper out of 60 marks. In 2026 it is on Wednesday 4 November from 2.00 to 4.30 pm, according to the KNEC 2026 KCSE timetable.

We do not publish or sell the official KNEC 2025 paper or its marking scheme. The questions below are original, with worked answers checked by a teacher.

How the 2025 English Paper 3 Was Set Out

The format has stayed steady for years. Question 1 is an imaginative composition (20 marks), where you choose between two prompts, often a story that must begin or end with given words, or an argument. Question 2 is a compulsory essay on a compulsory set text (20 marks). Question 3 lets you choose one optional text (20 marks): A Silent Song and Other Stories (edited by Godwin Siundu), Parliament of Owls by Adipo Sidang, or An Artist of the Floating World by Kazuo Ishiguro. School papers print a limit of about 450 words per essay, and markers reward relevance, organisation and language as much as length. The 2025 results were released in January 2026, as reported by The Star on the 2025 KCSE release.

KCSE 2025 English Paper 3 Questions and Answers: Practice Set

Question 1 (Imaginative composition): Write a story ending with the words “…and that is how the smallest voice in the room changed everything.”

Worked answer (plan and marking points): Build the story to earn the ending, not to bolt it on. A strong plan: (1) Open in a scene, for example a tense school baraza where a fees decision is being made, with a sensory detail in the first line. (2) Introduce a quiet Form Two girl who has noticed something the adults missed, such as a clerical error in the bursary list. (3) Raise the stakes: she is ignored, then mocked. (4) Turning point: she produces the evidence. (5) Resolution, then the exact closing words. Markers look for a clear plot, a consistent point of view, dialogue punctuated correctly, varied sentences and vocabulary used accurately. A story that drifts and then pastes on the ending usually lands in the C range (roughly 8 to 10 out of 20).

Question 2 (Compulsory set text): “Poor leadership turns ordinary people into victims.” Write an essay to support this statement with illustrations from Paul B. Vitta’s Fathers of Nations.

Worked answer (outline): Introduction: state the stand in one sentence and name the novel, in which a group of travellers, including Professor Karanja Kimani, Comrade Ngobile Melusi and Pastor Chineke Chiamaka, journey to a summit of African leaders. Body: write four or five paragraphs, each opening with a topic sentence on one form of victimhood (lost livelihoods, broken families, silenced critics, wasted public money) and supported by a specific episode from a character’s story. End each paragraph by linking back to “poor leadership”. Conclusion: restate the argument and comment on Vitta’s satire. Retelling the plot without arguing earns very few marks.

Question 3 (Optional text): “The past can never be fully escaped.” Write an essay on this with illustrations from Kazuo Ishiguro’s An Artist of the Floating World.

Worked answer (marking points): Masuji Ono’s role as a propaganda painter during the war shadows his family after it; Noriko’s first marriage negotiation with the Miyake family collapses, and Ono suspects his past is the cause; before the miai with the Saito family he visits former colleagues such as Matsuda to make sure they will not harm his reputation; his former pupil Kuroda, whom Ono reported to the authorities, refuses to see him; the old pleasure district around the Migi-Hidari is torn down, yet Ono keeps returning to it in memory. Each point needs a short quotation or a precise reference to earn full credit.

Likely Topics for 2026 Practice

This is not a prediction of the actual paper. Based on the pattern of recent mocks, practise these themes: leadership and corruption, betrayal, the role of women, generational conflict, and change versus tradition. For compositions, prepare one strong opening paragraph and one closing paragraph you can adapt to any prompt, and practise both “begin with” and “end with” stories.

Three Habits of High-Scoring Paper 3 Essays

  • Plan for five minutes. A clear outline is the fastest way to improve organisation marks.
  • Argue, do not narrate. In set-text essays, every paragraph should answer the question.
  • Edit for tense, spelling and agreement. Markers deduct for repeated language errors.
