What is in KCSE CRE Paper 1?
Six essay questions; answer any five, 100 marks. Paper 1 covers the Bible: Old Testament, the life of Jesus in Luke and the early church. Always follow the instructions printed on your own paper; layouts can change.

How to answer CRE Paper 1 for marks
- Quote Bible references briefly; a clear point is worth more than a long quote.
- Answer the ‘lessons for Christians today’ part with practical points.
- Divide time: about 25 minutes per question.
- Read every question twice and underline the command word (state, explain, describe, calculate).
- Budget time by marks: roughly one minute per mark, plus checking time.
Topic weighting: where the marks are in CRE Paper 1
Each of the five questions you answer carries 20 marks, usually split into parts (for example 7, 6 and 7). The ‘lessons for Christians today’ part appears often.
Common mistakes in KCSE CRE Paper 1
- Writing a Bible story without linking it to the question
- Too few points for the marks (a 7-mark part needs about seven points)
- Mixing up Old Testament prophets
- Writing long Bible quotations

- Count points to marks.
- Begin each point on a new line.
- Use present-day Kenyan examples in application parts.

These are original practice questions written for revision, not KNEC papers.
Question 1
Give three ways Abraham showed his faith in God.
Answer: He left his homeland when called, believed God’s promise of a son in old age, and was willing to sacrifice Isaac.
Question 2
State two teachings of Jesus on prayer in Luke.
Answer: Pray persistently, as in the parable of the persistent widow, and pray humbly, as in the Pharisee and the tax collector.
Question 3
State four promises God made to Abraham.
Answer: Many descendants, a land for his descendants, blessing to all nations through him, and a great name.
Question 4
Give three teachings of Amos on social justice.
Answer: Condemned oppression of the poor, bribery in courts and cheating in trade.
Question 5
What happened on the day of Pentecost?
Answer: The Holy Spirit came upon the disciples, they spoke in tongues, Peter preached and about 3,000 people were baptised.

On the day of CRE Paper 1
Tuesday 10 November 2026, 8.00 to 10.30 am. Be seated 15 minutes early. Carry blue or black pens, a pencil, a ruler and a rubber. Read the whole paper in the first five minutes and mark the questions you will answer first. Leave the last ten minutes to check your answers and that your index number is on every page you hand in.

Where can I get the KCSE CRE Paper 1 marking scheme?
Official marking schemes are not published by KNEC for sale. Use practice papers with worked answers and the answers on this page, and be wary of anyone selling ‘marking schemes’ for the coming exam.
Are KCSE CRE Paper 1 leaked papers real?
No. Papers sold online before the exam are scams, and holding them is an exam irregularity that can lead to cancelled results (see KCSE exam rules).
