Term 3 of 2026 has ended for most learners in Kenya, and the long holiday has begun. Because the third term was only nine weeks and national assessments started the very next Monday, many families have been unsure exactly when their child’s school closed, why some schools sent learners home a week early, and when classes resume. This article pulls together what the Ministry of Education calendar says, what schools have actually done, and what the next ten weeks look like for each group of learners.

The Official Closing Date: Friday 23 October 2026
Under the 2026 school calendar issued by the Ministry of Education, basic education institutions opened for Term 3 on Monday 24 August and closed on Friday 23 October 2026. That applies to public and private pre-primary, primary, junior and senior schools. In August, false posts claimed the calendar had been changed. On 19 August 2026 the Cabinet Secretary for Education issued a clarification that the calendar remained unchanged, as reported in Education News’ report of the Ministry’s Term III calendar clarification. The same notice confirmed that teacher training colleges follow a longer term that runs to 6 November 2026.
Our 2026 term dates page has the whole year’s calendar, including the April and August breaks.
Why Some Schools Closed Earlier
The 23 October date is the latest a school should run normal Term 3 lessons, not a rule that every learner must be in class until that afternoon. As reported by The Star, a number of primary and secondary schools wound up Term 3 in mid-October, and some schools serving as examination centres released non-candidates on Friday 16 October so that candidates could complete rehearsals and settle before the national assessments. The same report said most schools were expected to begin closing on Wednesday 21 October, the day after the Mashujaa Day holiday.
If your school closed early, that is normally a decision by its management, communicated through a circular or WhatsApp message. Keep that letter, because it usually also lists the opening date, the fees for Term 1 2027 and any holiday assignments.
Candidates Stay On for National Assessments
For learners in assessment years, the term effectively continues:
- Grade 6 (KPSEA): written assessments begin on Monday 26 October. See our KPSEA 2026 day-by-day guide.
- Grade 9 (KJSEA): papers run from Monday 26 to Friday 30 October, according to the KNEC timetable summarised on our KJSEA timetable 2026 page.
- KILEA and KPLEA: learners following the intermediate and pre-vocational special needs curricula also sit their assessments from 26 October.
- Form 4 (KCSE): written papers run from Monday 2 to Friday 20 November 2026, as reported by Nation and Kenyans.co.ke, after orals and practicals in late October. Our KCSE 2026 hub has the timetable and revision papers.
Day candidates go home each evening; boarding candidates usually remain in school until their last paper.
How Long Is the Long Holiday?
For learners who are not sitting national assessments, the December holiday runs from 26 October 2026 to 1 January 2027, roughly ten weeks. The Ministry’s 2026 school calendar circular, as published by Kenyans.co.ke, gives the same holiday window. The Daily Nation has described it as at least 70 days without school for some learners.
Term 1 of 2027 has been widely reported to open on Monday 4 January 2027, the first weekday after the holiday ends. However, the full 2027 calendar, including closing dates and half terms, had not been confirmed in a published circular when this article was written. The Cabinet Secretary has said the Ministry intends to move to three terms of about 12 weeks each from 2027, so the familiar 13, 14 and 9-week pattern may change. We track what is confirmed in School Term Dates 2027: What Is Confirmed. Until your school’s letter arrives, avoid paying for non-refundable travel around an unconfirmed date.
Holiday Tuition Is Not Allowed
Parents often ask whether schools may call learners back for paid lessons during the long holiday. Section 37 of the Basic Education Act, 2013 states that no pupil shall be subjected to holiday tuition, and the Ministry has restated the ban in memos to education officers. Learning at home, structured reading and revision you organise yourself are a different matter and are encouraged.
A Simple Plan for the Ten Weeks
- Weeks 1 to 2: rest. Learners who have just finished KPSEA or KJSEA especially need a real break.
- Weeks 3 to 7: light, regular revision of 30 to 60 minutes a day, focusing on topics your child found hard in Term 3 reports. Our week-by-week long holiday revision plan sets this out for Grades 4 to 8.
- December: family time, chores, reading and outdoor play. Keep screen time agreed and visible.
- Last week of December: check the uniform, books and shopping list, confirm the opening date and budget for Term 1 fees.
Grade 9 leavers have a special situation, since they wait for KJSEA results and Grade 10 placement. Our guide to the holiday after KJSEA covers what they can do in the meantime.
Keep Learning Ticking Over
For short daily practice, our December holiday homework packs cover Grades 4 to 9 with answers, and the CBC Challenge quizzes give quick, marked practice. If you want unlimited practice papers through the holiday, a Term Pass covers 120 days, which takes you through December and into Term 1. Every question is written in the CBC format and checked by a teacher.
