Mombasa is Kenya’s smallest county by land, a little over 200 square kilometres, yet it holds the island city plus three busy mainland zones: Kisauni and Nyali to the north, Changamwe and the Port Reitz side to the west, and Likoni to the south. When a Mombasa parent asks “how do I get my child ready for KJSEA?”, the honest first answer is often “start by sorting the morning journey”.
Getting To The Paper On Time
KPSEA (Grade 6) and KJSEA (Grade 9) run from Monday 26 October to Friday 30 October 2026, at each learner’s own registered school. If your child crosses water or a bridge to school, build in slack. Families in Likoni who use the ferry know how unpredictable the queue at the channel can be in the early morning. Those coming over Nyali Bridge or the Makupa Causeway face the usual rush-hour jam. For exam week, aim to arrive at least 30 minutes before the school’s normal reporting time. A child who sits down calm has already won a few marks.
Our exam countdown keeps the date in front of everyone in the house.
Revising In The Coastal Heat
Late October on the coast is hot and humid, and the afternoons are tough for concentration. Shift the main revision block to the cooler early evening, after the child has eaten and had some water, rather than straight after school. Keep sessions short: two 25-minute blocks with a break in between work better than one long sit in a warm room. A full water bottle in the exam bag is worth reminding them about every morning.
Where The Weak Spots Usually Are
We cannot tell you what your child’s school has or has not covered, but we can show you, topic by topic, what the papers test. Open What to revise now, pick Grade 6 or Grade 9, and tick the topics your child feels unsure about. In multilingual Mombasa homes, where a child may move between Kiswahili, English and another home language in a single day, the English comprehension and composition topics deserve an honest look, and so does the Kiswahili insha. Practise each with a timed short paper from our exam-week mini-papers.
After KJSEA: Thinking About Senior School
Junior school now sits within primary schools, so a Grade 9 learner in Mombasa will most likely sit KJSEA in the same school as their Grade 6 assessment. The bigger change comes next: Grade 10 in January 2027, placed by pathway (STEM, Social Sciences, or Arts and Sports Science). Some coast families look at boarding schools upcountry; many prefer to keep children close. Whatever you lean towards, read our CBC pathways guide first, and use the KJSEA grade calculator so the results slip makes sense when it arrives.
A Short Plan For The Last Week
- Tonight: choose three weak topics using What to revise now.
- Next four evenings: one topic each, 30 minutes of questions, then read every explanation.
- Saturday morning: one timed full paper, before the heat builds.
- Sunday: no new topics. Pack pens, a ruler, a calculator if allowed, water, and the route plan.
