Which Grade 10 Subjects to Choose if Your Child Wants to Study Medicine

“My child wants to be a doctor. Which subjects should they pick in Grade 10?” It is one of the most common questions Grade 9 families ask, and the stakes feel high because senior school under CBC narrows a learner’s subjects much earlier than the old system did. The short answer is the STEM pathway, with Biology and Chemistry as non-negotiable electives. The full answer has a few more details worth getting right, especially as the rules for university entry under CBC are still being finalised.

Start From What Medical Schools Require Today

The clearest guide is what medicine requires now. The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council admission requirements for MBChB say a KCSE student needs at least a C+ mean grade plus an average of B (plain) in each of four cluster subjects:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics or Mathematics
  • English or Kiswahili

Dentistry (BDS) uses the same cluster. Meeting the minimum only lets a student apply; actual places go to the strongest applicants, and competition is fierce. Nairobi Leo reported that in the 2026 placement cycle, medicine, nursing, pharmacy and engineering were fully subscribed in the first round and were withdrawn before the revision window opened.

The new rules for the first CBC cohort, who finish Grade 12 in 2028 and join university in 2029, have not been published. But a medical degree will still need a strong foundation in biology and chemistry, so the safest plan is to choose subjects that match this cluster as closely as possible.

The Pathway: STEM, Pure Sciences Track

Senior school learners take four core subjects (English, Kiswahili or Kenyan Sign Language, Mathematics and Community Service Learning) plus three electives, as the Daily Nation explained in its explainer on how senior school works. A future medical student should be in the STEM pathway, usually in the Pure Sciences track. A strong combination is:

  • Biology, which is essential.
  • Chemistry, which is essential.
  • Physics, strongly recommended. It keeps the “Physics or Mathematics” cluster option open and supports topics such as medical imaging and physiology.

Biology, Chemistry and Physics appears among the Pure Sciences examples in the Ministry’s published list of subject combinations. Read our STEM pathway explainer for the full picture of the three STEM tracks.

Core Mathematics, Not Essential Mathematics

STEM learners take Core Mathematics, the more demanding version. For medicine this matters twice over. It is one of the two options in the Physics-or-Mathematics cluster today, and university science courses such as biostatistics and pharmacology assume solid algebra. Do not let a learner aiming for medicine drift into Essential Mathematics. See Core vs Essential Mathematics for how the two differ.

Do Not Neglect English and Kiswahili

Many families focus only on the sciences, but English or Kiswahili is the fourth cluster subject, and B (plain) is the bar. Doctors also write notes, explain diagnoses and read research every day. Encourage plenty of reading in both languages from Grade 10 onwards.

Is Your Child a Good Fit for This Route?

Interest alone is not enough, and marks alone are not enough either. Look for:

  • Consistently strong results in Integrated Science and Mathematics in junior school, ideally in the Meeting or Exceeding range at KJSEA.
  • Real curiosity about the human body, health and how living things work.
  • The stamina for a long course. MBChB in Kenya usually takes six years, followed by a year of internship before full registration.

If your child’s science results are borderline, the STEM pathway is still a good choice, because it keeps many health careers open: nursing, clinical medicine, pharmacy, laboratory science and others. Several of these can also start at diploma level through KMTC; see our KMTC entry requirements guide.

Choosing the School

A pathway name on a school’s profile does not mean it offers every combination. Before you list schools, confirm that each one actually offers Biology, Chemistry and Physics together, and ideally has working laboratories. Use the Senior School Finder and our guide to choosing your 12 senior schools, and read Grade 10 core subjects and electives explained to understand the elective rules.

What to Do Now

  1. Choose STEM, Pure Sciences, with Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
  2. Keep Core Mathematics and work steadily on English or Kiswahili.
  3. Follow KUCCPS and the Ministry for the official CBC university rules, and read our KUCCPS placement under CBC update.

For learners still in Grade 9, the KJSEA grade calculator helps you read results by learning area, and the CBC Pathway Report gives a personalised view. Full Integrated Science and Mathematics papers with worked answers are in the Monthly Pass (KSh 500 by M-Pesa).
