Why the Three Day School Choices Matter in Grade 10 Placement

When families sit down to choose senior schools, attention usually goes to the boarding list, especially the well-known C1 and C2 schools. The three day school choices are often filled in quickly at the end. That is a mistake. For many learners, a day school is where they will actually spend Grades 10 to 12. This guide explains why these choices matter and how to make them well.

The Rule

For the first cohort placed in 2025, each learner chose 12 schools: nine boarding schools (three in the home county and six outside it) and three day schools in the home sub-county, according to The Star and the Daily Nation. Day choices are therefore local by design.

Why They Matter

  • They are the realistic fallback. Popular boarding schools have limited space, shared between counties by formula, and top places go first to priority learners in each sub-county. Many learners end up in a day school.
  • They are fee-free. Under Gazette Notice No. 1449 of 6 February 2026, public day senior schools charge parents no tuition fees. Boarding schools may charge up to KSh 53,554 a year.
  • Your child lives at home. Daily travel, safety and family routines all depend on which day school it is.

Pathways in Day Schools

Day schools mostly offer two of the three pathways, depending on staff and facilities, according to the Daily Nation. Before listing a day school, confirm that it offers your child’s pathway, ideally their subject combination. A day school that does not offer the pathway may not be a workable placement.

How to Choose Three Good Day Schools

  1. List every day school in your sub-county. The Senior School Finder lets you filter by sub-county and day or boarding status.
  2. Check pathways on the official selection portal.
  3. Check gender. Some day schools are single-sex.
  4. Check the journey. Time it at the hour your child would travel. Consider cost, road safety and weather.
  5. Visit if you can. Ask about class sizes, laboratories, and how they support learners in your child’s pathway.
  6. Talk to parents whose children attend.

Costs Beyond Tuition

Day school families still pay for uniform, transport and lunch where there is no free programme. The fee guidelines say schools may not charge levies outside the gazetted structure without approval, so ask for any charge in writing. Read boarding vs day school costs and hidden CBC costs.

A Day School Can Be the Right Choice

For many families, a good local day school is the best option, not a consolation. It keeps the learner close to home, saves tens of thousands of shillings a year and lets parents stay involved in daily learning.

A Note for Urban Families

In towns, several day schools may be within reach, but traffic can turn a short distance into a long journey. Check matatu or school bus routes and costs before listing a school.

Support at Home

Day scholars have evenings at home, which is a chance for steady revision. The Year Pass at KSh 4,000, about KSh 333 a month, opens every paper, quiz and revision book on the site, and a second child is half price.
