Karen lies south-west of Nairobi’s CBD, on the edge of the Ngong Forest and within sight of the Ngong Hills on a clear day. It is one of the city’s lowest-density suburbs: large plots, long driveways, and houses set back among trees. That space is a gift for revision, but it comes with one big local quirk. Distances are long, almost nobody walks to school, and school runs depend on cars, school buses and the Karen–Ngong Road and Langata Road corridors.
KPSEA (Grade 6) and KJSEA (Grade 9) run from Monday 26 October to Friday 30 October 2026, at each learner’s own registered school.
The School Run, Exam Edition
Many Karen schools run buses that loop through Karen, Langata, Hardy, Bomas and further out towards Ngong and Kiserian. For exam week, ask the school whether pick-up times change, and whether there is a back-up plan if a bus breaks down. If you drive, the Southern Bypass junctions and Ngong Road near Dagoretti Corner can slow sharply. Aim to arrive early enough that your child has ten quiet minutes before the first paper. Keep the date in view with the exam countdown.
Plenty Of Space, Not Always Enough Structure
A quiet house with a garden is ideal for studying, but quiet can also mean drift. Children with a lot of after-school activities, from riding to swimming to music, sometimes reach exam week with less timed practice than their classmates. This week, trim the extras and give each evening one clear task. Use What to revise now to choose three weak topics, then do one 15-minute exam-week mini-paper per topic, reading every worked answer afterwards. Revising outdoors on the verandah in daylight is fine; the point is a timer and no phone.
A Note On Mixed Curricula
Karen has a long-standing mix of CBC and international schools, and some families have moved between them. If your child joined a CBC school in Grade 7 or 8 after time in another system, expect gaps in specific CBC topics rather than in general ability. Pre-Technical Studies, Agriculture and Kiswahili are the subjects where we most often see that pattern. Go through the topic list honestly together and practise the unfamiliar ones first.
Thinking About Grade 10
With junior school now hosted in primary schools, most Grade 9 learners sit KJSEA where they did Grade 6. In January 2027 they start senior school, and placement follows their chosen pathway: STEM, Social Sciences, or Arts and Sports Science. Karen families often look both at day schools on the south-western side of Nairobi and at boarding schools in other counties. Whichever way you lean, get the pathway right first, because it sets the subject combination for three years. Our CBC pathways guide explains the choices, the KJSEA grade calculator converts levels to points, and the pathway report sets out options for your child.
