WhatsApp forwards are full of CBC pathway myths that push Grade 9 families into panic choices. Pathways are real and important, but they are not caste labels. Here are the claims we hear most, followed by clearer facts you can check against Ministry sources.

Myth 1: “Only STEM Learners Have a Future”
Fact: Kenya’s Senior School structure has three pathways—STEM, Social Sciences, and Arts and Sports Science—because the curriculum mission is to nurture every learner’s potential. Social Sciences leads into law, business, education and public service; Arts and Sports build creative and performance careers. Labour markets need all three. Start with careers per pathway rather than ranking pathways as first-class or third-class.
Myth 2: “Arts and Sports Is for Learners Who Failed Maths”
Fact: Competitive arts, film, music and sports programmes demand disciplined practice, portfolios and often trials. Weak maths alone is not an automatic ticket in. Choose Arts and Sports because of strength and interest, not as a dumping ground.
Myth 3: “Once You Pick a Pathway You Can Never Change”
Fact: The Ministry allows pathway and subject-combination changes subject to guidelines and school capacity, and placement reviews go through official portals when windows open. Change is possible but not guaranteed—see how to change pathway in senior school.
Myth 4: “Private School Letters Beat the Placement Portal”
Fact: For the public placement process, admission is tied to system-generated joining instructions with unique codes. The Ministry has cautioned against recognising physical letters issued outside the system and against seeking bulk downloads or gate deals. Use placement.education.go.ke and school HOI channels.
Myth 5: “Pathway Equals University Course Automatically”
Fact: A pathway shapes Senior School subjects; university and TVET courses still have their own entry rules. A STEM learner is not automatically admitted to medicine, and a Social Sciences learner is not barred from every technical diploma. Check future course requirements early on official university or KUCCPS information when the learner approaches exit from Senior School.
Myth 6: “Parents Should Choose; the Child Just Reports”
Fact: Selection guidance emphasises talent, interest and ambition. Parents should coach and reality-check, not dictate from prestige alone. Our guide on helping a Grade 9 learner choose a pathway gives a conversation structure.
Myth 7: “All Schools Offer All Pathways Equally”
Fact: Schools differ in tracks and subject combinations they can staff. The selection portals show pathways and combinations by school. Always confirm what your shortlisted schools actually offer before locking choices—see core subjects vs electives and choosing a senior school pathway.
A Calmer Decision Checklist
- List three activities the learner enjoys without being pushed.
- Match those to pathway strengths, not to neighbour gossip.
- Review recent school performance honestly.
- Shortlist schools that teach the needed combination.
- Use official MoE/KEMIS selection information, not forwarded PDFs of unknown origin.
For a documented family plan, consider the CBC Pathway Report or Grade 10 Pathway Bootcamp. Free pathway context also sits on the CBC pathways hub.
