How to Change Pathway in Senior School After Grade 10 Starts

Families who want to change pathway senior school after placement—or even after reporting—need the official process, not a side deal at the gate. Under Competency Based Education, pathway and school changes run through Ministry systems and depend on vacancies. Here is what parents and learners should know.

What Can Change, and What Cannot

Senior School pathways are STEM, Social Sciences, and Arts and Sports Science. Learners choose a pathway and subject combination during Grade 10 selection on platforms such as KEMIS Selection and Placement. The Ministry has also stated that learners may change pathway and subject combinations within the senior school they were selected to, subject to guidelines and available capacity, and that school or placement reviews must go through official portals—not handwritten letters collected at the gate.

Physical “admission letters” issued outside the system are not recognised; joining instructions carry unique codes generated by the placement system (placement.education.go.ke and related MoE channels).

Changing School Placement: The Official Route

When a placement review window is open, requests are initiated through the junior school Head of Institution (HOI) on the placement portal—not by parents logging in alone. Reporting on the process explains that the HOI selects the learner, states a reason, chooses pathway and subject combination, then picks a school that shows available capacity. Approvals escalate by school category (for example C1 decisions at Ministry headquarters, with regional, county and sub-county levels handling other categories).

Practical steps for parents:

  1. Book a calm meeting with the junior school head (or the senior school principal if you are already reporting and the school advises that route for your case).
  2. Carry the learner’s assessment results, the current joining instructions and a clear, honest reason (medical, safety, documented error, pathway mismatch with evidence).
  3. Ask the HOI to submit the request in the portal while the window is open.
  4. Wait for system approval; do not pay intermediaries who promise a slot.

Review windows are time-bound. For the first Grade 10 cohort, the Ministry announced specific January 2026 revision dates for legitimate, verifiable cases after earlier placement rounds. Future cohorts will publish their own dates—always follow the notice for your year.

Changing Pathway Inside the Same School

If the school offers more than one pathway, a learner who was placed correctly but chose poorly may request an internal pathway or subject-combination change. Success depends on:

  • spaces in the destination class;
  • whether the learner meets any school or Ministry guidance for that combination;
  • timing (early in Grade 10 is far easier than mid-Grade 11).

Put the request in writing to the principal, attach teacher recommendations if asked, and keep copies. An internal change still has to match what the school can staff and timetable.

What Usually Does Not Work

  • Showing up at a full C1 school to negotiate a place outside the portal.
  • Switching pathway every term because of peer pressure.
  • Ignoring subject prerequisites for the career you want later.

For career fit before you request a change, read careers per pathway in CBC, pathway myths and helping a Grade 9 learner choose. If placement missed your choices entirely, see Grade 10 placement appeal. Personalised help is available via the Pathway Report and Pathway Bootcamp.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can parents submit a pathway change online themselves?
Placement change requests are submitted by heads of institution through the Ministry portal. Parents work through the school.

Can my child change from Social Sciences to STEM in Form/Grade 11?
Only if the school has capacity and the learner can catch up on required subjects. Ask the principal early; do not assume an automatic right.

Is paying for a transfer legal?
Use official channels only. Paying brokers for public school slots risks fraud and can jeopardise admission.

Where do I verify joining instructions?
Use the official Grade 10 placement platform and the unique code on the system-generated letter when reporting.
