Thika is the economic heart of Kiambu County, a town of about 280,000 people at the 2019 census, sitting where the Thika and Chania rivers meet at the top of the Thika Superhighway. Some of its residential areas, such as Bendor, Maporomoko and Thika Greens, actually fall across the line in Murang’a County, which is a small detail that confuses new residents. Whichever side of the boundary you live on, your Grade 6 or Grade 9 learner sits the same national papers: KPSEA and KJSEA, from Monday 26 October to Friday 30 October 2026.
A Town With Its Own Rhythm
Unlike Ruiru or Juja, Thika is not mainly a Nairobi dormitory. Many parents work in the town’s factories, offices, markets and farms, and most children go to school within Thika itself, in areas like Makongeni, Section 9, Landless, Ngoingwa, Kiandutu and Kianjau. Journeys are shorter, which is good news for exam week. The busiest choke points are around the town centre and the Superhighway interchanges at the start of the day. If your child takes a matatu or boda boda, agree the time and fare with the rider for all five mornings.
Keep track of the days with our exam countdown.
Revising After A Long Day
Children who help in a family business after school, at a kiosk, a stall or on a shamba, often reach the evening tired. This week, try to swap that time for revision, even if only for 45 minutes. Short and focused wins: choose one topic from What to revise now, then sit one of our 15-minute exam-week mini-papers and read the worked answers. The first five questions on each are free.
A Weekend Break That Helps
Thika has easy outdoor options close by, including Chania Falls in town and Fourteen Falls on the Athi River towards Ol Donyo Sabuk. After a timed paper on Saturday morning, a family walk outdoors in the afternoon is a reasonable way to clear heads before the final Sunday. The point is rest, not another lesson.
Which Topics First?
For Grade 9 learners, Mathematics and Integrated Science usually carry the most anxiety. For Grade 6, English comprehension and Mathematics problem-solving matter most. But let your child’s honest answers decide: go through the topic list with them and choose the three they least want to see. Those are this week’s work.
From KJSEA To Grade 10 In Thika
Junior school now sits inside primary schools, so most Thika learners take KJSEA in the same compound as KPSEA. Senior school begins in January 2027, with placement based on the pathway your child chooses: STEM, Social Sciences, or Arts and Sports Science. Thika and the surrounding sub-counties have many established secondary schools, both day and boarding, so families here usually have real choices. Start with the pathway in our pathways guide, understand levels with the KJSEA grade calculator, and use the pathway report for written guidance.
